A sporting complex was constructed many years ago affectionately called the “Gun Club” which originally held clay target shooting events. Although the shooting events no longer take place the name has stuck and was the go-to place for the locals to catch up with old friends and make some new ones and facilitates many of the community events. The Gun club has a primitive 12 hole golf course, cricket pitch, toilet facilities and function shed. It has seen many birthday parties, funerals and even a few weddings.
Over the last three years the Gun Club has been replaced by the Heli Pad as the primary site of all community events. Events at the Heli Pad events are supported by the Community Information van for news on community events and for Wedge merchandise.
Over the years annual community and fund raising events have evolved, including:
- Australia day cricket match that pretty well runs all day involving kids, dogs, anyone who feels like a bowl or a bat.
- Anzac day two-up
- Easter fun run that is held on the beach involving races for all ages, toddlers to veterans with prizes and medals handed out to the fleet footed.
- The Anzac dawn service draws over 100 community members out of their warm beds every year to remember the fallen. It is proud feeling standing on the beach while sipping warm soup from the community caravan, watching the sun come up and listening to the delayed service from Canberra via a car radio through the open door of a 4WD, followed by a fly over by the RAAF organised by yet another community member
- Well attended New Years’ Eve bash and Easter Saturday Day of the Green.
The popularity of these events is constantly increasing and they seem to get bigger and bigger every year.
These events are publicised through Newsletters, Facebook posts and in the Wedge Calendar that can be purchased from the Community Information van. Refer also to the Calendar of Events page.
